Handwriting is a motor skill first. Building the right foundations makes every writing task easier.
Good handwriting depends on a set of skills working together: hand and finger strength, a functional pencil grasp, visual-motor coordination, posture, and the ability to plan and remember how letters are formed. When those pieces come together, writing feels easier, kids can keep up with schoolwork, and their ideas finally make it onto the page.
Occupational therapy for handwriting looks past the page to find which skills your child is ready to build next, then strengthens them through targeted, play-based practice. Because we work on the foundations, progress carries over to schoolwork, homework, and creative writing alike.
We work with children who have dysgraphia, ADHD, Autism, developmental coordination challenges, or no diagnosis at all. Whatever brings you to us, we meet your child where they are and build from their strengths.
Kids build the strongest writing skills in the places where they actually write.
Clinic-based therapy asks a child to learn a skill in an unfamiliar room and then carry it over to homework and class. In-home and school-based handwriting therapy builds those skills right where they are used: at the kitchen table where homework happens, or at the desk where your child writes every day.
Working in your child’s real environment also means we can adjust the things that make writing easier, like seating, table height, lighting, and the tools your child uses, so new habits stick from day one.
Parents learn more, too. With your therapist right beside you, you see exactly how to set up a homework space, keep practice short and fun, and support your child between sessions.
Purposeful, playful practice that builds the skills behind clear, comfortable writing.
Your therapist comes to your home or your child’s school with everything needed for the session. Sessions typically run 45 to 60 minutes and are built around your child’s goals, whether that is letter formation, spacing, building writing endurance, or writing comfortably.
A session might include:
Putty, tongs, clips, and building play that strengthen the small muscles writing depends on.
Developing a comfortable, efficient grip so your child can write comfortably for longer.
Multisensory practice with letter shapes, sizing, spacing, and staying on the line.
Mazes, tracing, copying, and drawing games that connect what the eyes see with what the hand does.
Simple activities and homework setup tips so progress continues between sessions.
We wrap up with a brief check-in with you, sharing what we worked on, how your child responded, and what to practice before the next session.
You don’t need to prepare anything. We bring the tools, the expertise, and the plan.
Our mobile therapists travel fully equipped. You won’t need to buy special supplies or rearrange your home before we arrive. We bring handwriting and fine motor materials tailored to your child’s current goals. What we ask of you is simple: a comfortable spot to work, ideally where your child usually does homework, and your presence so we can coach and collaborate in real time.
Every child’s writing develops at its own pace. Handwriting support may be a good fit if your child:
An OT evaluation shows exactly which skills to build next and gives you a clear plan.

Handwriting therapy is occupational therapy focused on the skills behind legible, comfortable writing: fine motor strength, pencil grasp, visual-motor coordination, posture, and letter formation. Instead of only practicing letters, the therapist identifies which skills your child is ready to build next and strengthens them through targeted, play-based activities.
Handwriting develops gradually, and every child moves through the stages at their own pace. An evaluation is a good next step when writing takes your child extra effort, their hand tires easily, or you’d like them to feel more confident showing what they know at school. Our guide to early handwriting development covers what to expect at each stage.
