Children who have sensory processing or motor difficulties may have challenges with eating. Feeding therapy is designed to help children consume a diet with sufficient calories to promote or maintain growth. Feeding problems can include Difficulties with managing the bites of food, Chewing foods, Managing the textures of food (gagging, vomiting, refusals), A very limited number of foods the child will eat (less than 3 per food group is a problem that should be addressed).
In collaboration with the child’s physician, Therapeeps will complete an individual assessment of oral motor skills (chewing, tongue use, lip and cheek use), observe the child during a meal, interview the caregivers, and review a three-day food diary.
An action plan will be put in place to address any OT-related concerns in collaboration with the child’s feeding team (pediatrician, other physician specialist, dietician, speech therapist, or another provider) to guide the family and the child towards success.
