Self Regulation and Sensory Processing Treatment

The term “sensory processing” refers to a person’s ability to take in sensory input from their environment and organize it in a meaningful, purposeful way of use. Children who have sensory processing disorders have difficulty with the intake of sensory information, and therefore may have difficulty with self-regulation, motor skills, social skills, self-care skills, and or motor planning abilities.

Children who have Sensory Processing Disorders can are often seen as controlling, defiant, bossy, or prone to frequent meltdowns. On the other end of the spectrum, these kids can appear disinterested, clumsy, unable to participate in play and everyday living skills, or unable to engage in learning new skills.

Therapeeps knows that as Dr. Ross Green says, “children do well when they can”.

We work with you and your child through child led and play based activities, helping you to connect with your child in a relationship focused method called Floortime. This method seeks to consider your child individual profile to help form warm connections and help your child thrive.

Fine Motor Skills Treatment

Fine motor skills are important in being able to participate in everyday living activities. They are a result neurological, muscular, sensory and cognitive processes. This leads to difficulties with activities such as playing with toys, drawing, self care management, shoe tying, and using utensils.

Through play based and standardized assessment which focus on hand and tool use, Therapeeps clinicians will provide an individualized treatment plan for your child’s development considering on their personal interests.

Gross Motor Skills Treatment

Children may have some difficulty with coordination or a developmental difference that impacts their ability to engage in a variety of sports, recreational activities, or everyday living skills, such as running, jumping, playing a variety of sports, or riding a bike

Therapeeps clinicians identify specific differences or challenges a child might have that impact their ability to participate in play, sports, recess, and other desired recreational activities. An individualized program will be created which includes a holistic picture and techniques to encourage participation in activities they enjoy.

Feeding Challenges Treatment

Children who have sensory processing or motor difficulties may have challenges with eating. Feeding therapy is designed to help children consume a diet with sufficient calories to promote or maintain growth. Feeding problems can include Difficulties with managing the bites of food, Chewing foods, Managing the textures of food (gagging, vomiting, refusals), A very limited number of foods the child will eat (less than 3 per food group is a problem that should be addressed).

In collaboration with the child’s physician, Therapeeps will complete an individual assessment of oral motor skills (chewing, tongue use, lip and cheek use), observe the child during a meal, interview the caregivers, and review a three-day food diary.

An action plan will be put in place to address any OT-related concerns in collaboration with the child’s feeding team (pediatrician, other physician specialist, dietician, speech therapist, or another provider) to guide the family and the child towards success.

Therapeeps clinicians use a relationship based method along with consideration of a child’s individual sensory profile to provide parents with the guidance they need. This can be done in person in the Bay Area or via teletherapy. The focus is on helping parents and caregivers develop skills and use tools to interact with their child as a bridge for the development of motor skills and social relationships. Parent coaching begins with an interview and may include some parent questionnaires. Video observations of play or skill areas may be included.
